WBA Orders Mandatory Negotiations
The World Boxing Association has formally instructed super middleweight champion Jaime Munguía to begin negotiations with mandatory challenger Bektemir Melikuziev. Both fighters' management teams have been given an official window to reach terms ahead of the October 21 deadline.
Should the involved camps fail to finalize terms within the designated negotiation period or decline to negotiate, the sanctioning body's championship committee may send the bout to a purse bid pursuant to WBA rules.
Munguía's Recent Championship Path
The Mexican champion claimed the WBA super middleweight title on May 2 after securing a unanimous decision victory over José Armando Reséndiz. This scheduled defense against Melikuziev represents his required mandatory assignment under sanctioning rules.
