Michal Cieslak Promoted and Ordered by the WBC
The WBC has officially elevated Poland's Michal Cieslak to full cruiserweight world champion. The sanctioning organization has ordered the newly crowned champion to defend his title against David Benavidez, stipulating that the winner of that contest will subsequently have to face Jai Opetaia.
This ruling comes in the wake of recent events in Las Vegas, where Jai Opetaia defeated Noel Mikaelian last weekend. However, the WBC world title was not contested in that bout, as Mikaelian was stripped of his belt for failing to comply with a mandatory order to meet Benavidez.
Benavidez's Titles and the Agreement with Opetaia
David Benavidez, who already holds the WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles, now has a clear path to further unify the division. Furthermore, Benavidez and Opetaia had already verbally agreed to meet each other in the ring, a prospect that is now reinforced by the WBC's official ruling.
For his part, Michal Cieslak receives another opportunity at the elite level after previously falling short in world title challenges, including a defeat against Britain's Lawrence Okolie. The precise date and scheduling details for his showdown with Benavidez have yet to be officially announced by promoters.
